Finding clarity in the rain — my Brecon Beacons hike and the power of being outdoors

Walkers on a misty hillside path in the Brecon Beacons

Yesterday I found myself hiking through the Brecon Beacons… in weather that can only be described as biblical. The kind of rain that doesn’t just fall — it sideswipes you like it’s personally offended. We were all soaked through within minutes. Clothes heavy, boots squelching, hair doing its own thing. And yet, there was something incredibly grounding about it.

There’s a raw honesty in being outdoors when nature shows up unfiltered. No sunshine to hide behind, no comfort to soften the edges — just you, your breath, the sting of rain on your skin, and a reminder that you’re still here. Still moving. Still living.

And honestly? That’s exactly what my soul needed.

Nature has a way of resetting you

The last few months have been a season of change for me — navigating a breakup, navigating myself, and stepping into a space of rediscovery. Times like these crack you open in ways you don’t expect. They push you into growth whether you were ready or not.

Being out in the rain yesterday gave my nervous system the reset it had been craving. Fresh air. Real movement. A moment away from the noise and expectations.

It’s incredible how simply being outside — even when the weather is wild — can regulate your mind, soothe your spirit, and bring your energy back into alignment.

Walking through the wind and rain stripped everything back to basics. It helped me reflect without overthinking, and simplified some of the reasons why this chapter of my life has unfolded the way it has. Not in a “why me?” energy, but more from a place of… what is this trying to build in me?

If you’re going through something, please don’t sit alone

Breakups, grief, healing, transformation — whatever your version looks like, it’s so easy to withdraw and isolate. But being surrounded by others on that hike, even complete strangers, reminded me that none of us are actually walking our path alone.

If you’re going through a difficult chapter, I encourage you to get yourself into nature. Move your body. Let the air shift your energy. And most importantly, allow yourself to be around people who get it.

There is purpose in every single situation — even the ones that shake you.

Summit and Soul Retreats — a community with real heart

The Brecon Beacons hike was organised by Summit and Soul Retreats, and they’re doing something genuinely meaningful.

The founders, Scott Rogers and Jade Leigh Godfrey, created this space because they’ve walked their own battles. Scott, with 22 years of service in the Marines, has endured some of the toughest mental and physical experiences imaginable. Jade has overcome her own challenges and now empowers women through strength, resilience and wellbeing.

Both know the power of fresh air, movement and community — mentally, physically and spiritually. That’s why they created these hiking retreats: to bring people together, to support those who are struggling, and to create a space where healing happens naturally.

You don’t have to navigate your healing alone — and you don’t have to rush it, either. You’re allowed to move at your own pace.

Final thoughts

Yesterday’s hike wasn’t just a physical challenge. It was a reminder that healing is rarely neat or gentle. It’s muddy. Wet. Uncomfortable. Messy. Honest. And absolutely transformative.

Sometimes all it takes is a mountain, a group of like-minded souls, and a bit of sharp Welsh rain to show you just how strong you actually are.

If you’re in your own season of change — I see you. And there is meaning in this part of your story.
